Our amazing Auckland Teacher, Holly, shares with us her journey in finding her inner-confidence, and how drama helped her get there…
Growing up, I was always the kid who was “too shy to try.”
My parents, being the amazing humans that they are, constantly encouraged me to do everything and anything I wanted to do. I tried T-ball, BMX, dancing, netball, singing, and guitar lessons. Some of which I was pretty good at it and through further development might’ve been a pro, but I didn’t believe in myself enough to continue. So I’d try, then quit!
I did this for years, until I was 13 and started drama class at high school, which I absolutely loved! It was my safe place during my awkward pre-teen years. Where I could totally be myself with no judgement. I found my voice, my freedom, and my CONFIDENCE! Gaining enough confidence in fact, to audition for the school production. Over the years I went from small ensemble roles to the leading lady in Guys and Dolls! (A high school highlight of mine.)
Because I’ve had this experience, I truly believe that performing can help children believe in themselves! I was fortunate enough to witness this in one of my classes. A lovely girl, who was quite shy at the start of last term, but came out of her shell completely on performance day! Watching this awesome rather shy little human burst onto the stage with this magnificent voice and amazing stage presence was such a proud moment for me as a teacher.
Whether it’s the buzz of having an audience, the butterflies in your tummy, or the fact that someones there to support you, performing gives children an opportunity to step outside their comfort zone in a fun, creative and playful space. Where their imaginations can run completely wild!
I love seeing children in our Marrzipan performance week shine! The look on their face of pure joy and pride when they’ve finished an amazing performance, realising they can do anything they set their mind to! I feel like we’re helping these kids in so many ways and I feel so blessed to be a part of this experience with them.
BELIEVE YOU CAN ACHIEVE!
